great thoughts from the both of you.

yes, being 'fully present' is key for me.

and parke, you're right now, there is a balance... it's very easy to lean on one side and excuse yourself from the other.

I've heard it said that children are the new idols of our century, I can personally see why that is now. I think i'll write a post in the future about this.

entertainment, and 'hangout' get the best of just about all of us!

The question of how we balance movement with relationship (whether family or not) is tough one. The need to spend time bonding with and teaching children is enormous. And the need to spend time bonding with and encouraging other people is huge.

But, yes, we have to move some. I've seen families ball up like a turtle and not engage their neighbors or people in need in hopes to "protect and nurture" the child. Sadly, they actually hurt the child by not establishing a pattern of the equality of people of all classes, of generosity to the poor and hurting, and of engagement with those around us who are different.

Singles or couples can do the same thing by focusing too much on entertainment, group hangout time or a hundred other things that seem good at the time, but are done too frequently.

"Sometimes I take look one look at my daughter all my angst and passion to change the world just melts away."

man, i TOTALLY relate to that statement. i wonder if this is part of what paul was thinking about in 1 Cor. 7, where he compares married people with single people in terms of their devotion to God vs. being divided in their loyalty.

i have certain dreams that i've layed aside for now, gladly, because my concern is being fully present while my daughter grows up. i trust that those dreams will still be there to pick up and run with when fatherhood allows. and if not, then maybe they weren't all that important to begin with.

sorry for the essay, you just hit on something that resonates with me!
